Retail Media Revenue Calculator: Assumptions and Scenarios

Model retail media revenue with explicit assumptions. Separate inventory, eligibility, fill, pricing and costs, then review what the scenario can support.

Retail media revenue calculator: build a defensible scenario

A calculator is useful when its assumptions are visible. Read each output as a scenario built from stated inputs, then test those inputs against your inventory and advertiser demand. Keep media fees separate from product sales, supplier-funded discounts and profit. A precise-looking total is still an estimate.

Read the forecast before using the total

A revenue scenario connects a set of commercial assumptions. It does not establish advertiser demand, confirm that every placement is sellable or show the incremental effect on commerce.

Some models start with gross merchandise value and an assumed media take rate. Others build revenue from eligible placements, delivery and pricing. A GMV-based estimate is a top-down planning view; it should be reconciled with inventory and actual supplier appetite before becoming a sales target.

Keep the units and assumptions visible

Record the currency, period and source for each input. Define eligible opportunities, delivered impressions, click-through rate, price per chargeable event and any reservations. Explain whether a fill or sell-through assumption already includes budget constraints or delivery losses; multiplying overlapping factors can undercount the same loss twice.

Keep separate pricing models on separate inventory allocations. A fixed tenancy and an auction forecast should not both claim the full value of an exclusive placement.

Worked example: a separate illustrative calculation

Suppose a synthetic month contains 1,000,000 potential ad opportunities. Assume 60% are eligible and 50% of those eligible opportunities produce a delivered ad. That gives 300,000 impressions. At 1% CTR and £0.70 average revenue per billable click, the model produces 3,000 clicks and £2,100 gross media fees.

These invented inputs explain the arithmetic; they are not the native calculator's verified formula, an industry benchmark or a PA result. The calculation assumes one opportunity per request and that counted clicks satisfy the agreed billing definition.

Move from fees to a business case

Deduct the relevant revenue share, service costs, sales costs and implementation costs on a consistent basis. Separately assess any change in product contribution. Supplier funding passed to shoppers is not automatically media income.

Bring your assumptions, evidence and uncertainty to a review before using the result as a commercial commitment.

Frequently asked questions

Is calculator revenue a profit forecast?

No. A gross media-fee scenario does not automatically include revenue shares, implementation, sales and service costs or changes in product contribution. Build those separately on a consistent basis. A top-down estimate also needs reconciliation with eligible inventory and advertiser demand.

Can I add CTR uplift and coverage uplift?

Not directly. Their combined effect depends on the formula and whether the inputs overlap or influence each other. In the stated CPC example, multiplying two assumed 20% relative improvements gives 44%. That arithmetic does not establish the improvements are independent or achievable.

Is the worked example the live calculator's formula?

No. It is a separate, explicitly synthetic explanation of a CPC scenario. The live tool's actual inputs, defaults and calculations must be documented alongside its outputs. Do not treat an illustrative example as a verified reproduction of the native calculator.
