The retail operating system

One engine for every retail decision.

Most retailers run four or five separate tools.

Search in one tool, pricing in another, ads bolted on top — nobody owns the order shoppers see, and margin leaks between them. The Unified Decision Engine governs relevance, inventory, margin and sponsored demand in one pass, on every surface, including the AI assistants now doing the shopping.

Start with one surface. Leave the rest of your stack untouched.

Sponsored Product Recommendations on Product Detail Pages

Design sponsored product-page recommendations for alternatives, accessories and complements. Define eligibility, compatibility, billing and measurement.

Sponsored recommendations on product pages: similar, complementary and bundle placements

A shopper viewing a product may need an alternative, a compatible accessory or a complete set. Those are different recommendation tasks and different advertising opportunities. Define the shopper's job first, then decide which supplier-funded products can participate without overriding compatibility, availability or retailer policy.

Give each placement a specific job

A product page should not use one undifferentiated recommendation list for every commercial objective. An alternative helps a shopper choose between substitutes. An accessory helps them use the chosen item. A complement adds a related purchase. A bundle composes several products into a coherent set.

PA's Sponsored Products page includes product-page and recommendation placements. The table below is a proposed planning framework for those surfaces, not a statement that every illustrated rule is preconfigured.

Placement — Shopper question — Example eligibility check

Similar alternatives — Is there a better fit for my need? — Relevant category, attributes and permitted price range

Compatible accessories — What works with this item? — Verified connection, size, model or platform compatibility

Complements — What else belongs with this purchase? — Useful relationship, appropriate context and availability

Bundle components — What do I need together? — Valid combination, no duplicate components and clear total price

Separate relationship quality from advertising eligibility

First determine whether a product fulfils the placement's role. Then establish whether the supplier is authorised, the campaign is active and the item qualifies under retailer rules. A bid should not turn an incompatible product into a compatible accessory.

For a synthetic example, camera_A uses mount_X. A mount_X lens may qualify for an accessory placement; a mount_Y lens should fail the compatibility check even if its campaign bids more. A tripod may be a useful complement, but it is not a replacement for the camera. These examples describe required catalogue relationships, not real products.

Carry the right context into the request

The page needs a stable identifier for the current product and, where appropriate, the basket contents. PA's Recommendations parameter reference documents product-page and cart context. Map those fields to the configured route and verify how the sponsored strategy uses them.

Avoid presenting a sponsored alternative as though the shopper selected it. Label paid placement clearly and make the destination, price and product relationship understandable. When the current product is unavailable, an alternatives placement may serve a different task from an accessory placement; keep that distinction explicit.

Define the commercial event

Agree which campaign and placement receive the impression or click, what makes the event billable and how multiple displayed products are handled. A multi-product set needs clear product-level and placement-level identifiers. Do not infer that one interaction should charge every supplier represented in a bundle.

Measure the whole purchase

Compare attachment, orders, contribution and media income alongside click-through. Inspect returns or compatibility problems where relevant. A carousel that attracts clicks but distracts from the main purchase may not improve the business result.

Start with one placement and a defined control. Expand when the relationship quality, commercial reporting and shopper outcomes support the additional inventory.

Illustrative example

SYNTHETIC: camera_A required_mount=mount_X; lens_B mount=mount_X => compatible accessory candidate; lens_C mount=mount_Y => reject regardless of bid; tripod_D => possible complement, not substitute; camera_E => possible substitute only after category/specification assessment. No prices or performance uplift are asserted.

Frequently asked questions

What is the difference between a substitute and a complement?

A substitute can replace the item being considered; a complement adds something useful alongside it. The same category relationship is not enough to determine either. Define the shopper task and the relevant product attributes before inviting sponsored campaigns into the placement.

Can a higher bid override compatibility?

The proposed design treats verified compatibility as an eligibility condition. A product that fails that condition should not enter the accessory auction, regardless of bid. Product and engineering teams must confirm how those rules are configured and evidenced in the particular deployment.

Does a sponsored bundle charge every supplier?

The billing contract must define that behaviour. A bundle can contain multiple products and suppliers, but one interaction should not silently become several charges. Specify the campaign, placement and chargeable event and make the reporting consistent with that agreement.
